Sustainability Vision and Action Plan
become a waste free campus!
As much a reasonably feasible, ensure that goods and services procured are sourced from companies who follow sustainable practices (social and environmental norms) using life-cycle costing in procurement decisions.
Create an introductory course on sustainability that's open to all students. It should balance the environmental, social, and economic aspects, as well as study case studies of highly sustainable businesses/communities/projects.
Eliminate sytofoam cups and plates from campus.
Switch to reusable or completely biodegradable cutlery, dishware, coffee cups, an food containers for all food events and food services on campus.
Encourage student research projects where students of different programs work together to study a problem from their own field's perspectives. It would expand student's understanding of knowledge outside their own fields and support the multidisciplinary framework that many sustainability-related challenges require.
Promote student awareness of local sustainability action and connect with them through partnerships, independent research, and internships.
More fountains should be outfitted with the capability to fill water bottles easily. Along with the current types being tested around campus, there are other kinds, many of which are simpler in design requiring fewer parts and electronics. Simpler methods could prove useful for widespread adoption of the idea.
Encourage public transit to campus by offering reduced fares for all students and staff on campus.
Increase green stormwater infrastructure on campus through development of green alleyways, increased rooftop gardens and more permeable surfaces (reducing overall heat island effect as well).
Bad temperature control in buildings affects occupant comfort and wastes energy resources.
Why don't we have bins beside the printers where we can put our one-sided paper? This way we would not recycle paper that can still be reused.
