Have long term (3-6 year) projects broken down into semesters. As mentioned rooftop gardens is a great project. You could have students doing initial research, and development of all aspects of the project (architecture, finance, engineering, plant sci). Within the description/requirements of the research, there would be a meeting with other students working on the project and future project members. All of this would ...more »
Every 2 years new research machinery gets bought from grants, but these grants don't provide the funding or training for upkeep, maintenance, or upgrading. McGill now has thousands and thousands of tonnes of lab equipment that's collecting dust because they have broken down, become obsolete in two years, or research interests have shifted. We need a system in place to maintain this machinery, reuse it, or supervise the ...more »
Replace any auto-flushing type urinals with motion controlled ones. This will result in a huge savings in water consumption
Test the waste water leaving McGill campus, identify any pollutants, identify sources of these pollutants, eliminate or mitigate these sources. Inact measures/education schemes to prevent these types of pollutants from entering the sewers.

Though there are some portals available for students to apply for these research opportunities, it would be very beneficial for students and professors to have a single online portal that was known by every student, where students could find research ...more »
Create mechanisms to engage new faculty in sustainability research, teaching, and projects (on and off campus).
Encourage student research projects where students of different programs work together to study a problem from their own field's perspectives. It would expand student's understanding of knowledge outside their own fields and support the multidisciplinary framework that many sustainability-related challenges require.
