I disagreeAlong with increasing the availability of recycling, we should follow the Macdonald Campus' lead and have composts available at the downtown campus!

I disagreeAs much a reasonably feasible, ensure that goods and services procured are sourced from companies who follow sustainable practices (social and environmental norms) using life-cycle costing in procurement decisions.

I disagreeCreate an introductory course on sustainability that's open to all students. It should balance the environmental, social, and economic aspects, as well as study case studies of highly sustainable businesses/communities/projects.

I disagreeMore fountains should be outfitted with the capability to fill water bottles easily. Along with the current types being tested around campus, there are other kinds, many of which are simpler in design requiring fewer parts and electronics. Simpler methods could prove useful for widespread adoption of the idea.

I disagreeEliminate sytofoam cups and plates from campus.
Switch to reusable or completely biodegradable cutlery, dishware, coffee cups, an food containers for all food events and food services on campus.

I disagreeIncrease green stormwater infrastructure on campus through development of green alleyways, increased rooftop gardens and more permeable surfaces (reducing overall heat island effect as well).

I disagreeEncourage student research projects where students of different programs work together to study a problem from their own field's perspectives. It would expand student's understanding of knowledge outside their own fields and support the multidisciplinary framework that many sustainability-related challenges require.

I disagreePromote student awareness of local sustainability action and connect with them through partnerships, independent research, and internships.

I disagreeBad temperature control in buildings affects occupant comfort and wastes energy resources.

I disagreeEncourage public transit to campus by offering reduced fares for all students and staff on campus.

I disagreeWe already have several edible garden projects on campus run by student and community groups...Santropol Roulant even does apiculture. We saw canteloupes and tomatos grown in front of James Admin. We have an orchard. Wouldn't it be fun if we grew more fruits and veggies on campus and used it as a delicious showcase of the tertiary and/or experiential learning opportunities that can be provided by urban agriculture?

I disagreeWhy don't we have bins beside the printers where we can put our one-sided paper? This way we would not recycle paper that can still be reused.

I disagreeThere has been an increase in student interest in campus sustainability. Moreover, in the last several years students have been figuring out how to get credit for it. Examples include the McGill Food Systems Project (http://mfsp.wordpress.com/) and the recent McGill Energy Project, whereby students have partnered with stakeholders on campus (e.g. McGill Food and Dining Services; Utilities and Energy Management), identified ...more »
There has been an increase in student interest in campus sustainability. Moreover, in the last several years students have been figuring out how to get credit for it. Examples include the McGill Food Systems Project (http://mfsp.wordpress.com/) and the recent McGill Energy Project, whereby students have partnered with stakeholders on campus (e.g. McGill Food and Dining Services; Utilities and Energy Management), identified professors who are interested in supervising "non-conventional" research, and engaged in a very different kind of learning than the norm, so-called "experiential learning". However, students have had to figure this out on an "ad-hoc" basis; there is no formal way for students to enhance campus sustainability through for-credit research. Why not create a course, or a program, that is promoted as and reserved for this type of learning? Other universities have done it. We should too!

I disagreeTied into the idea of better asset management, the idea would be to have a store front where surplus items from around campus can be stored in (rather than stuffed into little rooms around campus taking up valuable space) and sold out of.
There are other Universities with programs along the same lines.

I disagreeRequire any building or renovation projects at McGill to include provisions for the recycling of the construction waste generated during that project. Have it built into the contract bidding process as a requirement that the contractors have to follow.
Use recycled material whenever possible for projects.

I disagreeMcGill should ensure that its students graduate as worldly citizens conscientious of social, economic and environmental impacts they affect and can effect in their communities, wherever they go.

I disagreeI have noticed that people using the uPrint devices print things that they don't want and leave the paper on the machine or lying around. I think it would be very helpful and useful to have a paper recycling bin at every U-Print device. Paper only recycling, so a single narrow slot in the top of the bin.
Also, some questions that were brought up, "..are there already enough bins, but in the wrong places? What exactly is the optimal bins for uPrint (considering frequency of pick-up, contamination reduction, etc. – I like the slot idea!)? Are the resources currently available?"
If required, this could be a good opportunity to apply to the Sustainability Projects Fund to acquire bins if needed.

The McGill cafeterias should be redesigned to encourage ownership and participation. They should become gathering spaces. Instead of tables and chairs being bolted into the ground, they could be arranged so that people feel like they can eat and discuss together.
Instead of cafeterias being relegated to corners, they should be at the center of campus life.
Instead of feeling like transitory spaces, where you eat as fast as possible and leave, they should feel like a place to meet new people and eat together, as well as meeting spaces to discuss new ideas.
Simple interior design changes can change the way we think of our school, encourage ownership and community, and will get people thinking about their surroundings and what part they can play in it.

I disagreeWhy does Mcgill libraries not have a adequate supply of headphones for rent? They could be 3-6 hrs rentals, that way we would not over consume the cheap headphones the library supplies students with right now. The rent-able headphones could be bought from a north american company.

I disagreeOnline course packs would save both the university and the students money by removing printing costs. Course packs could still be rented out by the bookstore, but it could be in a DVD format.
